greatnews

I have been relying on Rss news to stay on the cutting edge of the news and blog opinions heavily. Before, I used feeddemon, my ex-favorite news aggregator.

But after feeddemon went on subscription model, I haven been looking for a replacement ever since.
But for a long time, I didn’t find anything which can match to feeddemon until I found Greatnews from curiostudio, which can do nearly everything I used feeddemon to do before.

1. I can synchronize with bloglines.Channel group hierarchy is synchronized between Bloglines and Greatnews as well. You can read among different news channels group as much as you can do in the bloglines website. Feeddemon doesn’t offer this. It only imports all the feeds from bloglines into one single channel group. If I want to see Entertainment news, I can look into Entertainment news channel group when using Greatnews. But feeddemon places all the feeds from bloglines into one single channel group no matter if the feed’s Entertainment news or not. Also, you can choose not to mark channels read at bloglines, which is really helpful option feeddemon doesn’t offer. In one word when you use greatnews to read feeds from bloglines, you can’t feel much difference between bloglines website and greatnews. It brings 100% original bloglines flavor to your desktop. If you are a regular bloglines user, Greatnews can make you feel right at home.
2. GreatNews is the fastest RSS reader period. Even with hundreds of rss feed subscriptions, GreatNews’s response is always instantaneous. It only takes 1 minute or so to update all my 286 feeds and nearly retrieve 3000 news items. So if you have a huge collection of feeds, you are going to appreciate this. One thing which feeddemon really annoys me about is that it works on pre-group basis, only update the news in the active group, and so I need to read all the news channel group to update all my feeds.
3. Greatnews has a smashing outlook style when you tick view–>news list. It’s three panes structure with news items displayed like emails in the headline pane on the right top and reading pane lies on the right bottom comfortable enough for you to read. You can search all the news items by content and title in the active news channel group or active news channel. Like outlook, Greatnews also has efficient tools for archiving items. You can use lables to categorize items like you do in Gamil. You can creat watches to look for keywords in news items as they’re downloaded. For example, if you create a watch that looks for the word “ipod,” then every news item containing the word “ipod” will be stored in the watch. After you create a watch, it examines every incoming news item whenever any channel is updated.Use a watch to find interesting news items without having to look for them yourself. This enables you to subscribe to dozens - or hundreds - of channels that you may not want to read regularly, yet always find out when one of them has an item that’s of interest.
4.You can configure greatnews to use firefox by Tool–>option–>usability. Tick box before ‘open rss link in external default browser’.As in your case, firefox is your default one. Greatnews obviously puts firefox fans right in his mind.As a firefox heavy user, I really appreciate this effort. Inside greatnews, the news items are displayed in the built-in newspaper styles, which rip off all the annoying flashing ads, banners, and spywares.
5.Search channels provide a powerful way to search outside of Greatnews’s subscriptions. Simply select a feed search engine then enter your keyword, and Greatnews will subscribe to a dynamic channel containing the search results for that keyword. This is a great way to find out when someone is talking about a topic of interest in a feed you’re not already subscribed to.
6.The Cleanup Wizard is handy for removing old RSS feeds–the default cleanup period is 1 week, but you can change that to a shorter or longer period.
7. “Channel Organizer” helps organize channel subscriptions in one place. Use “Find Channel” to locate your subscriptions quickly.
8. Full page reading, You don’t tear newspaper into pieces to read them. Why should reading rss news articles be any different? GreatNews is optimized for full page reading and displays headlines and content all together in build-in newspaper, so you can scan through rss articles quickly and pick interesting ones to dig in,which is the whole point of RSS. Combined with functions like “Open Next Unread Channel”, you don’t need to waste any time to find where all the unread articles are.
9. Channel Statistics, Channel Statistics shows your top 10 most or least visited channels. This function is like itunes’s smart playlist: ‘25 most played’ or ‘25 least played’. I find out this quite useful sometime— when I find some news channel I barely read, I can get rid of it from my subscription.
Greatnews functionally is one of the best news aggregators around if not the best. I want to play with the power and speed of Windows desktop RSS reader, I want to play with the convenience of a web-based aggregators like bloglines or newsgator, and Greatnews can give the best of both worlds. Greatnews has a elegant interface and simple set up which make Rss news reading such an easy task even for a Rss novice. It’s very easy to organize even a huge collection of feeds with Greatnews when you have tools like ‘lable’, ‘news watch’, and ‘channel organizer’; It’s very easy to keep up with subject interesting you with ’search channel’; It saves you lots of pain when greatnews is so fast–Sometime Greatnews updating hundreds of news channels is even faster than IE opening up a website. Using Greatnews also can give you certainty and confidence which you don’t have while using lots of other softwares, cause greatnews’s support forum is a very friendly and active community where developers go on answering enquiries on a daily basis. I used to pay for a software like this–feeddemon, but greatnews with even more simplicity and efficiency is free with unlimited function and time.
You won’t lose anything when you use such a great news reader.
Greatnews is great news indeed!
